I remember when I was a child. I grew up in a poor neighborhood, so my parents couldn't exactly afford what I wanted. One day, I showed up to a new school in a pair of imitation Michael Jordan shoes and got made fun of. It was on that day that I decided never, ever, would I be getting a pair of imitation shoes again. I was going to get a pair of name brand tennis shoes no matter what I had to do to get them. So the time came for me to get a new pair of tennis shoes, and I told my parents that I wanted a pair of Nike's. As expected, they told me that they were too expensive and that they couldn't afford them. Any other kid would have just given in. Not me. I didn't care if my parents didn't have the money, they were going to get me those tennis shoes. Of course, they kept telling me no. They tried everything: explaining that they couldn't afford them, they tried buying me a cheap pair anyway (that I refused to wear), they tried punishing me. None of that worked on me.
